During the 7th Scientific Conference on Biology and Health at Uni-CV, Mateus Andrade, a lecturer and researcher at the Faculty of Science and Technology at Uni-CV, and one of the speakers, discussed the innovative development of low-cost weather stations focused on sustainable fishing. This project, called ELEVAR2030, was born from a collaboration between the University of Cabo Verde and the University of Pennsylvania, supported by the ASEDA institution and funded by the United States Embassy in Cabo Verde. The idea initially arose to measure air quality and climate parameters but was redirected to support the fishing community, as required by the funding.
The ELEVAR2030 weather stations measure various climate parameters such as wind direction and speed, temperature, humidity, tide agitation, precipitation level, and atmospheric pressure. These data are vital, as Cabo Verde frequently faces extreme weather events that severely affect fishermen and fishing activity.
