RS²Lab members win second place in Pan-African Robotics Competition

Students Anaxímeno Brito and Edmilson Tavares, research assistants at the Responsible and Intelligent Solutions Laboratory (RS2Lab) at the University of Cape Verde (Uni-CV), took second place in the Artificial Intelligence league of the Pan-African Robotics Competition (PARC). The final phase of the competition was held in person in Senegal, bringing together 19 teams from various African countries.

Under the theme “Artificial Intelligence Solutions for Materials Mining,” the RS2Lab team, composed of students from the Computer Engineering and Computer Science program, stood out with an innovative project. Guided by RS2Lab and the Responsable Artificial Intelligence Lab (RAIL), the students developed an artificial intelligence system based on wearable sensors. This system monitors the fatigue levels of mining workers in real time, with the aim of preventing accidents caused by stress or fatigue, promoting greater safety in the workplace.

The team shared second place with a team from Kenya and was recognized for the innovation and practical impact of the project. Anaxímeno and Edmilson expressed their gratitude for the logistical and institutional support provided by Uni-CV, RS2Lab, and RAIL, which was essential for their participation in the international event. They also encouraged greater involvement by Cape Verdean students, especially younger ones, in future competitions.

RS2Lab is proud of this achievement and reaffirms its commitment to promoting innovation and social responsibility through artificial intelligence.
