On April 11, 2025, the University of Cape Verde hosted the second Master Class on particle physics. The Master Class, which is an initiative of the IPPOG “International Particle Physics Outreach Group”, aims to show young people the type of activities that are developed in Experimental Particle Physics. Under the guidance of Professor Sónia Semedo, president of the Union of Physicists of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (UFPLP) and a member of the RS2lab Laboratory, the Master Class in Particle Physics was attended by 26 students from the Cónego Jacinto Secondary School, who had the opportunity to explore fundamental concepts of particle physics and carry out practical measurements with real data from particle experiments.
The main aim of the event was to provide young students with a comprehensive overview of the essential concepts of particle physics, with special emphasis on the identification of elementary particles. It also sought to encourage the development of scientific careers, opening up horizons for future scientists.
The Master Class was not limited to the physical space of the university. To further enrich the experience, the event included the virtual participation of international experts, members of CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. These professionals shared their vast knowledge of basic research methods in physics, allowing the students to experience true global scientific collaboration.
At the end of the day of intense learning, the participants took part in a dynamic videoconference, where they discussed the results obtained. This moment replicated the atmosphere of a real international research collaboration, reinforcing the importance of exchanging knowledge and cooperation between scientists from different parts of the world. It was an experience that undoubtedly left its mark on the training of these future science professionals.
